Part 1 (Australia and its people) of the Australian Government's Department of Immigration and Citizenship resource document (page 15) proudly trumpets that 'Advance Australia Fair', the country's national anthem, 'unites the nation and is a public expression of the joy and pride in being Australian. http://www.citizenship.gov.au/learn/cit_test/test_resource/
All very well, but surely the second verse of the said national anthem is sounding exceptionally outdated and inaccurate given the current reception extended to refugees arriving by boat.
For those only familiar with the first verse, the fifth and six lines of the second are especially problematic.
Advance Australia Fair
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair.
