Almost obscured by rain, the flag-draped P&0 liner moored off Sydney Harbour's Bradleys Head, encapsulates for some the mood of nation in 2012. The on-off quixotic Australia Day weather - a mix of clouds, showers and the odd sunny break - took the shine off the day and no doubt spoiled a good many BBQs.
While some sectors of the community proudly brandished Australian flags on 26 January 2012, others were probably trying to recall when they last felt proud to be Australian, citizens of a nation that once was renowned for punching its weight, as Gareth Gareth used to remind us early and often.
No longer. Sigh.
